IREZUMI

A selection of traditional Japanese tattoos from the archive of photographer Fred Rohde



De Leidse fotograaf Fred Rohde is lid van de redactie van het Nederlandse tattoomagazine 'Tattoo Planet'.
Voor deze expositie heeft hij uit zijn omvangrijke fotoarchief een selectie gemaakt uit zijn foto's met Japanse tattoos.

For this exhibition he made a selection of photographs with Japanese tattoos from his extensive photo archive.

De Japanse tattookunst heeft een rijke traditie. Karpers (koi), draken, tijgers, pioenrozen, kersen- en lotusbloemen, chrysanthen, boeddha's, samoerais, geisha's en demonen zijn de meest gebruikte onderwerpen voor hele body-suits, maar ook voor arm- en beenstukken, zowel in kleur als in 'black and grey'. Irezumi betekent letterlijk het aanbrengen van inkt in de huid. Vroeger, in lange sessies in een exclusieve sfeer, door een erkende tattoomeester (hori) met behulp van stokjes met naalden. Tegenwoordig ook in gemakkelijk toegankelijke tattoostudio’s met de tattoo machine. In Japan zijn tattoos nog steeds - en niet geheel ten onrechte - verbonden met de Yakuza, de Japanse maffia. Maar de Japanse jeugd laat zich ook meer en meer tatoeëren met een mengeling van Japanse en Amerikaanse tattoodesigns. Bij ons in het westen zijn de prachtige motieven van de Japanse tattoos ook zeer geliefd. Veel liefhebbers lopen echter niet zo te koop met de ware kunstwerken waarmee hun lichaam versierd is. In de expositie van fotograaf Fred Rohde kan men deze bijzondere huidkunst in ieder geval wel bewonderen. Hij licht een tipje van de sluier op.

The Japanese tattoo art has a rich tradition. Carps (koi), dragons, tigers, peony roses, cherry- and lotus flowers, chrysanthemums, Buddha's, samurai, geisha's and demons are the most used subjects for whole body-suits, but also for arm- and leg pieces, as well in colour as in 'black and grey’. Irezumi means literally bringing ink in the skin. In the past, in long sessions in an exclusive atmosphere, by an acknowledged tattoo master (hori) with sticks with needles. Nowadays, also in open tattoo studio's with the tattoo machine. In Japan tattoos are still - and not unjustified - attached with the Yakuza, the Japanese mob. But the Japanese youth are getting more and more tattoos in a mixture of Japanese and American tattoo designs. In our society the beautiful designs of the Japanese tattoos are also very much loved. Nevertheless, many tattoo lovers don't show those true pieces of art with which their body is decorated. By the exhibition of Fred Rohde it is possible to admire this particular body art. He raises a tip of the veil.
